Queen Idia was a powerful figure in the Kingdom of Benin, which ruled parts of the West African coast for seven centuries. She was the wife of Oba (King) Ozolua, the Oba who reigned in about 1481AD and became the first Iy'oba (Queen Mother) of Benin when her son Oba Esigie, bestowed upon her the title Eguae-Iyoba (Palace of the Queen Mother). A warrior queen who led many armies into battle under Esigie's rule, Queen Idia was instrumental in expanding Benin through military conquests.
